Mixed reaction for new sports field booking changes

Campbell River is implementing changes to how user groups book sports fields. The city is moving to an hourly booking system, and has introduced a new hourly rate.

General Manager of Parks, Recreation and Culture, Ross Milnthorp says that previously, groups had paid per participant, but now it will be a flat rate based on time.

Milnthorp notes that all the money collected through fees goes to cover maintenance of the city’s sports fields. However, a local sports group isn’t too pleased about the change.

Chad Braithwaite with Campbell River Slo-pitch says the changes will result in an increased cost for members. He says an increase in fees is tough to take, especially when members have serious concerns about how the fields are maintained.

Braithwaite says they’d like the city to put a hold on the new fees and work with user groups to develop a maintenance plan for all the fields in town.
