Coroners Service releases May overdose numbers

The BC Coroners Service has released the stats on drug overdose deaths for the month of May.

Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe says 129 people died, an average of over 4 a day.

She says current systems like the supervised injection sites are having an impact, but more needs to be done in the long-term to control this problem.

“What we want to prevent is people overdosing in the first place, not [just] preventing them from dying once they’ve overdoses.”

Lapointe says there’s a lack of provincial funding and oversight for treatment centres.

She says with provincially-mandated measures, specialists would be able to focus on solutions that would best help those seeking treatment.
