Australian crews being deployed to assist in wildfire fight

Specialist crews from Australia are being brought in to help battle BC’s wildfires.

The 50 technical specialists are scheduled to arrive Wednesday and will be deployed throughout the province to help the 3,000 personnel already on the ground.

Provincial Fire Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek says the latest estimates of the amount of land burned is 188,000 hectares.

“We look at our last 10 years, the average [of burned land] would be a little over 154,000 so it’s fair to say we’ve already exceeded our average for season-ending hectares and we’re only about half-way through July.”

Skrepnek says they’ve had fewer new fire starts each day and crews have been able to get some of the smaller fires out, but there are still 159 wildfires burning across the province.
