BC Hydro says it’s going to be the longest extra water release down Elk Falls Canyon in memory. Until early May the flow rate is going to be up to 15 times higher than normal.
While BC Hydro says this will make for good views from the suspension bridge and the lookout people are being asked to stay away from Elk Falls itself for the next five months.
The increased flows are to accommodate the permanent shutdown of a second generating unit at the old John Hart facility in early February. The shutdown is part of the switch to the new facility. It’ll be the second of six units that have been taken offline for good.
