Councillors give pushback on noxious weeds, invasive plants bylaw amendments

A couple bylaw amendments in Campbell River are getting a little push back.

The city is looking at making changes that would make it an owner’s responsibility to clear out some noxious weeds and invasive plants from their properties. Those plants are scotch broom, giant hogweed, knotweed, and yellow flag-iris.

However at the last meeting a couple councilors raised concern over fining people for not complying, since the city itself still has a problem with the plants on some property it owns. The city’s environmental specialist, Terri Martin, says the idea behind the changes is more to reinforce existing efforts:

Martin says the city isn’t just looking to hand out tickets:

Council gave the amendments second reading at its last meeting. A third reading, possibly after some changes have been made, is still needed for the amendments to pass.
