A slope assessment is underway after a mudslide in Campbell River.
The city says professionals are looking at the ground conditions and bank safety on Park Road. The slope gave way over the weekend crashing a tree into a home and knocking it off its foundation and trapping two seniors inside.
No one was hurt but it and three other homes had to be evacuated. The city says it’s keeping the people who live in those homes in the loop but that they won’t be able to go back until the area is deemed safe.
The weekend’s heavy rains are most likely to blame for the mudslide. The city says its wastewater treatment plant treated about 15 and a half Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of water over 24 hours on Sunday, three times the amount it would do in dry weather.
