Comox Valley high schools closed for the day, under advice from RCMP

COMOX VALLEY, B.C.- All three high schools in the Comox Valley have been shut down today, under the advice of the Comox Valley RCMP.

A release sent out by School District 71 noted that they received notification earlier this morning from the RCMP that there were indications that one of the high schools was not safe.

“We continue to work closely with the RCMP to investigate the situation and, from our findings, it has been determined to close the three high schools,” the release stated.

“The decision was made based on a thorough investigation with the RCMP and with District staff.”

Elementary schools have been put under what is called a “hold and secure”.

“This means the outside doors of the school are locked. It’s normal operations inside the school,” said Mary Lee, a spokesperson for School District 71.

“A hold and secure is merely a precautionary measure.”

She noted that Hornby Island, Denman Island and Miracle Beach schools are so far out of the area of concern, that operations are running as normal today.

Further details are not available at this time, and 98.9 the Goat has reached out to the Comox Valley RCMP.
