Officials working to minimize environmental damage after boat starts to sink

APRIL POINT, B.C.: The Coast Guard says a ship off April Point on Quadra Island has been stabilized after it started sinking.

The incident happened late Tuesday afternoon. The Coast Guard says MV Salmon Seeker, a 176 foot fishing vessel, began taking on water.

It’s believed a small hole in its bottom opened up because of underwater work that was being done on it. Divers were able to patch the hole.

The Coast Guard says there was a small sheen in the boomed off area which was likely due to de-watering the engine and that MV Salmon Seeker is showing no signs of leaking.

The Coast Guard is working with the vessel’s owner, Oak Bay Marine Group, to help minimize any environmental impact.
