CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.- The Campbell River Environmental Committee is still concerned with the Upland Landfill site.
City council received an update from the committee at last Monday’s meeting. It was accompanied by letters from the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
The group is concerned about possible contamination of the city’s drinking water from creosoted timbers deposited at the site. Amber Zirnhelt, Campbell River’s Long Range Planning and Sustainability Manager, says the city is looking into it:
Zirnhelt says the province okayed putting the timbers there:
The city is sending a letter to the Ministry of Environment asking it to change its current practice of allowing disposal of hazardous materials prior to completion of the full assessment process and prior to issuing appropriate permits or certificates.
