BC ferries sailing cancellations criticized by local activist

 Quadra Island director at the Strathcona Regional District, Jim Abram, says the numerous ferry sailing cancellations Tuesday morning due to a broken radar was a fairly devastating situation for a ferry dependent island.

Abram says the Coast Guard had to take a patient from Quadra over to the hospital in Campbell River and there were disruptions to deliveries and businesses as goods and people were unable to get where they needed to go.

BC ferries is required to have two working radar systems to operate the ferry and Abram says they have two but should have a redundancy to avoid having to cancel sailings when one breaks.

 

 

Meanwhile BC Ferries spokesperson Darin Guenette says they are always working to provide a safe and reliable service at all times but they are not looking at adding in a third radar system right now.

 

He says the two radar systems on board provide a redundancy should one fail.
