Flu hits the Island while there is a mismatch between virus circulating and the vaccine

It is that time of year again when the flu starts circulating and people are off sick.

We caught up with North Island Medical Health Officer Doctor Charmaine Enns, and asked how good a match there is between the virus given in the flu vaccine and the form that is circulating right now.

Enns says the vaccine provides protection for three separate forms of the flu virus.

She says here on the North Island we have yet to be hit hard as flu season progresses.

Enns says we can expect to see more flu popping up here as it spreads between people.

She says the best defense against the flu is getting the vaccine, making sure sick people stay home, coughing into our arm not your hand and frequent hand washing.
