We Wai Kum athlete recognized with provincial award

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-One of Campbell River’s own is making a name for himself when it comes to rifle shooting.

Mark Anthony Roberts is one of just 12 Indigenous athletes in B.C. to receive a Premier’s Award for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport. The awards were presented in Richmond this past Tuesday.

They were created by the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council in collaboration with the BC Government to highlight the achievements of Indigenous athletes in the province.

Roberts is a member of the We Wai Kum First Nation. The 17-year-old won three gold medals in the under-19 group at last year’s North American Indigenous Games in Toronto and also helped coach the U16 athletes. His goals include returning to nationals in target rifle shooting and representing Canada at the Olympic Games.
