Woman arrested after fatal Campbell River crash released by police, investigation ongoing

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C- The woman arrested after Monday morning’s deadly crash is out of police custody.

According to Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard with the Campbell River RCMP, the 41 year old was released without charges, and the investigation into the crash is continuing.

The woman was arrested after a deadly crash between a silver Volkswagen Jetta and a 2000 grey Toyota Tundra at the intersection of Jubilee Parkway and Highway 19 around 5:45 a.m. on Monday. The Tundra didn’t stay at the scene after the collision, which left 39 year old Chris Pys, a local man, with life-threatening injuries.

He later passed away in hospital. His fiancée, two young children, and friends in the Merville area have been grieving the loss.

The suspect driver had been sought by police, and according to the RCMP, the Toyota Tundra was located in a driveway at Fearon Road in the Oyster River area around 11:00 a.m. on Monday morning.

The woman was arrested on scene. She was listed as the registered owner of the vehicle.

Beauregard told 2Day FM that officers are looking for more witnesses who may have seen the vehicle passing through Campbell River on Monday morning, between 5:00 a.m. and 5:45 a.m.

It’s believed that the truck went down Robron Road and Willis Road, before turning southbound onto Highway 19 and towards the collision scene.

Beauregard also said that officers didn’t want to rush or miss anything in the investigation, which led to their decision to release the woman. Pys’s family has been informed of the decision.

As for whether or not the 41 year old woman was driving the truck at the time of the crash, Beauregard indicated that police believe she was the driver. The investigation is now following up on “necessary leads”.

While charges have not yet been laid, Beauregard stated that police are looking at failure to stop at an accident causing death as the main charge, while the investigation considers the role of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possible impaired operation.

Once the full investigation has been completed, Beauregard indicated it would be up to the Crown to decide on what charges should be laid.

The 41 year old is not considered a flight risk.
