Investigators look at fatal crash on highway 19

North Vancouver Island Traffic Service is continuing an investigation of a two vehicle collision that resulted in the death of a 30 year old male from the Qualicum Beach area.
The crash was reported at 0902 hrs on 2015-01-19 and occurred on the Inland Highway 19 south of the Comox Valley Parkway, involving a pick-up truck and commercial vehicle.
Investigation so far revealed that the driver of a Mazda pick-up lost control of his vehicle as he was proceeding northbound on Highway 19, then skidded crossed the median, striking a southbound commercial transport truck being driven by a 61 year old male. The commercial vehicle was in the southbound right-hand lane and the driver seeing the approaching pickup made every effort to avoid the crash by moving toward the right shoulder.
The weather was clear and sunny but the road conditions at the time of the collision were reported to be slippery with icy sections.
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors contributing to the collision.
The Mazda pick-up sustained severe damage and the male driver and only occupant was killed instantly upon impact. The commercial transport truck was significantly damaged in the collision and the driver did not receive any physical injuries though was distraught.
Inspections of both vehicles are being conducted and police including the collision re-constructionist along with the Coroner are continuing investigation of this tragic crash. No charges are being considered.
