City offering rebates on residential building permits based on energy efficiency

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.- The City of Campbell River is reminding builders it’s offering energy-efficient incentives for new builds.

The program is for residential buildings and is meant to encourage developers to meet the BC Energy Step Code standards.

The incentives are available while funding lasts for new permit applications. They range from $500 up to a 100 per cent building permit fee rebate depending on what energy-efficiency standard is met.

The province introduced the Energy Step Code last April to boost energy efficiency in British Columbia. Amber Zirnhelt, Campbell River’s long range planning and sustainability manager, says the city wants to see one to two per cent of new buildings beyond energy efficiency code by 2020, and these incentives help achieve that.

The city is hosting a series of workshops for builders on energy efficiency with the next one set for April 25th. You can find more information about the workshops by getting in touch with the City’s Building Department by emailing [email protected] or by calling 250-286-5757.
