Zoning change to allow land-based fish farming facility approved

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-Campbell River council has approved aquaculture in the medium industry/manufacturing zone. The decision was made at Monday’s meeting.

The approval is the first step in a long process for proposed land-based pens for smolt production at 6501 Island Highway. The project, which is being put together by Grieg Seafood, is expected to include a large building and a wharf. It’ll be roughly double the size of Robron field.

The city says groundwater would be the primary source of water for the facility with sewage and wastewater treated on-site. The project will still need more approvals from the city, the province, and the federal government before it comes to fruition.
