Campbell River residents’ utility bills won’t go up, despite provincial increase

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-A provincial increase in waste discharge fees isn’t going to hike your utility bill.

At the start of this month the province raised waste discharge permit application and amendment fees and annual fees for air, effluent, refuse and storage permits for industry and local governments. It was the first increase of this kind since 2006. The province says the increases are to fund better environmental protection.

Here in Campbell River the city will be paying out roughly $2,300 a year more for its sewer treatment service as a result, bringing its total yearly fee to $12,800. The city says, however, that this fee increase is so minor that it won’t be passed on to your bills.
