CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-BC Hydro has taken one more step in the John Hart project journey. Generator 1 was permanently shut down on Monday.
As BC Hydro transitions from the old powerhouse to the new underground powerhouse six generators have to be taken offline. Generator 1 was the first unit to begin generating power at the old John Hart facility in December of 1947.
BC Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson says its community liaison committee, which has about has two-dozen representatives on it, were invited to shut the generator down. Watson says it was a nostalgic experience:
This was the third generator to be shut down. Watson says at least two will run until October:
The John Hart project is on budget and on schedule to be up and running this fall.
