Campbell River’s Rod Brind’Amour named Hurricanes head coach

RALEIGH, N.C.-One of Campbell River’s own is taking over the helm of an NHL team. Rod Brind’Amour has been named head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Brind’Amour has served as an assistant coach with the team since 2011. He was captain of the Hurricanes in 2006 when they won the Stanley Cup. In today’s announcement, Don Waddell, the team’s president and general manager, called Brind’Amour the “greatest leader in the history of this franchise.”

Brind’Amour played minor hockey in Campbell River, has an arena named after him here, and is the force behind the Brind’Amour/Nugent-Hopkins Golf Classic, which raises money for the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. He’ll be officially introduced as the 14th head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes at a press conference tomorrow morning at 9:00am PST.
