Resident starts a committee to keep the city pretty

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C- A Campbell River resident has taken it upon himself to organize trash clean-ups from the beaches and trails in Campbell River.

Travis Barry is the founder of a facebook page called ‘The Pretty City Committee of Campbell River’, which coordinates the clean-up events.

“It started when I got into photography because I noticed how pretty Campbell River is and then as I was exploring trails and beaches trying to get good photos, and then I also noticed how dirty Campbell River is,” said Travis Barry, founder of the initiative.

According to Barry, he went online to see if there were any existing groups that regularly do clean-ups around the city.

When he found that there were none, Barry took matters into his own hands and started the facebook page.

In just 3 weeks since it’s inception, the page has over 100 followers and even caught the attention of Greenways Land Trust, who contacted Barry and offered to provide materials to the committee.

They had their first clean-up at Ken Forde Park last weekend, 9 volunteers showed up to help.

Barry said he considered that a success, and was really grateful for the support of the land trust.

“They’ve been super awesome, they bought me everything I needed and lent me some trash grabbers. They said they would be more than happy to help me in future clean-ups,” said Barry.

“Lots of people have been very eager to help out.”

Barry is hoping to plan a clean-up for the first Sunday of every month, the next one coming up is on June 3rd.

“My goal is to make sure that the natural beaches, the waterfronts the trails, just all of this nature that we have in Campbell River, stays clean,” said Barry.

“I’m really hoping this takes off and that a lot of trash gets taken off of the beaches and trails.”

Barry said he is taking suggestions for where to clean up next.
