Three car accident causes fuel spill on Highway 28

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C- Despite extensive vehicle damage, no one was hurt in a crash that closed Highway 28 in both directions yesterday afternoon.

According to RCMP spokesperson Crp. Ron Vlooswyk, the accident, which happened around 2:00 pm on June 19, involved three vehicles.

Vlooswyk said a vehicle was rear ended while trying to turn onto Doyle Road from the highway, forcing it into oncoming traffic and subsequently colliding with a cube van coming in the opposite direction.

Approximately 200 litres of diesel fuel spilled onto the road from the van’s fuel tank.

One driver was taken to hospital as a precaution, but no one involved sustained serious injury.

The highway was closed in both directions for around two hours as the Campbell River Fire Department and Emcon Services worked to clean the spill.

None of the vehicles involved were in driving condition after the crash, according to Vlooswyk.

One driver has been charged under the motor vehicle act.
