Canada Day Fireworks a go

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C- New open fire restrictions do not affect the Canada Day firework display in Campbell River.

The British Columbia Wildfire Service released a statement last week saying that category two open fires are no longer allowed.

According to Thomas Doherty, Campbell River’s deputy fire chief, the city’s firework display isn’t a danger.

“The fireworks are displayed off of a barge out in the strait in front of us, so there’s no risk and it doesn’t fall under the category 2 ban,” said Doherty.

Under the restrictions, only open fires smaller than 0.5 metres wide and 0.5 metres high are allowed.

Fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns and burning barrels are not permitted.

Binary exploding targets, like the ones used for rifle target practice, are also banned.

According to the Campbell River Canada Day website, the fireworks start at 10:22 sharp and can be viewed from Robert V. Ostler Park on July 1st.
