Recycling service expanded at Island Return It

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Residents in the Campbell River area will be able to recycle more items thanks to a collection expansion at the Island Return It centre.

Additions to the recycling list include:

  • Zipper lock pouches for frozen foods, grapes, dried fruits and grated cheese
  • Bags for potato chips and wrappers for snack bars
  • Net bags for avocados, onions and oranges
  • Bubble wrap and plastic air packets

“Flexible plastic is one of the fastest growing types of packaging in use, and Campbell River got in early on this expanded service by participating in the pilot project,” said Drew Hadfield, the city’s Director of Operations.

“Expanding the recycling service helps increase the chance that this material ends up recycled rather than in the landfill.”

The collection of this material is aiding Recycle BC in researching and determining how to best recycle it, which includes turning it into engineered fuel.

The depot in Campbell River is one of the 117 stations from across British Columbia taking part in this pilot project.

It’s anticipated that all depots in the province will begin recycling these products starting January 1st, 2019.

An extensive list of acceptable recyclables can be found at recyclebc.ca.

The Campbell River return centre is located in Campbellton at 1580-F Willow Street.
