CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C- Roads to Elk Falls were closed this afternoon due to a search and rescue operation.
According to Stephen Watson, spokesperson for BC Hydro, around 3:30 pm, reports came in of someone falling into the Elk Falls Canyon – a 20-30 metre drop. Watson said the person did not fall from the suspension bridge, but somewhere else in the area.
First reponders arrived to the scene, and RCMP requested BC Hydro reduce river flows to aid in the search, which they did.
Several RCMP vehicles, a fire truck a helicopter were in the area.
As of 5:15, Watson said they were in the process of restoring flows to the falls, but he could not comment on whether or not the search has been concluded.
