CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The City of Campbell River Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association are promoting this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign: Look. Listen. Learn.

The campaign highlights three things to be aware of:

  • Look for places where fire could start.
  • Listen for the smoke alarm.
  • Learn two ways out of every room.

According to a news release, Campbell River Fire Department members will be visiting local Grade 3 classes throughout October to introduce the fire safety house program to students.

“With a scary increase in the number of home fires in Campbell River this year, Fire Prevention Week is a good time to turn up the volume on how to prevent and escape fires,” said fire chief Thomas Doherty.

He also said that people only have a minute or two to safely escape a burning home because house fires these days burn faster than ever.

“Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go,” Doherty added. “No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.”

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 7th to 13th. For more information, as well as to learn more about home escape planning, visit
