Campbell River resident looking for ideas for tiny homes, affordable housing

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Daniel Franklin, a long-time Campbell River resident, says a good solution to housing affordability in Campbell River are tiny houses.

Which is why he’s calling for fellow residents’ ideas on how tiny homes should be implemented in Campbell River, where they should be, and if recreational vehicles (RVs) should be considered tiny homes.

Franklin put together a Facebook group where he’s been putting polls and questions out to the community, and where he’s compiling residents’ ideas so he can put them all into one framework that they will present to city hall.

“It’s not just about tiny houses, it’s also about affordable housing in general. But tiny houses, I think – we think – would be a good solution to try to explore because there’s a lot of flexibility in it,” Franklin said.

Not a lot of municipalities allow tiny homes, and Franklin said this is what made him want to bring the idea to city hall and into Campbell River.

Franklin said tiny houses can help alleviate homelessness, besides helping new homebuyers get into the market, help residents who are wishing to downsize, as well as providing more environmentally friendly ways of building housing.

“It’s about bringing options to the community,” he added.

He said there’s no timeline yet on when they would present the framework to city hall, but he hopes it will be soon.
