City reminds residents to change smoke alarm batteries, recruits volunteer firefighters

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The City of Campbell River is reminding residents to change smoke alarms as they turn their clocks back an hour on November 4th.

According to a press release from the city, two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in residents that have no working fire alarms. Residents are encouraged to check their smoke alarms regularly, just as they regularly move clocks back or forward during Daylight Savings Time.

The city also put out a release calling for auxiliary firefighters with the Campbell River Fire Department.

“We have had a number of people inquire about auxiliary firefighting positions throughout the year, and we’re welcoming anyone who’s interested to join us for this information session,” said deputy fire chief Kelly Bellefleur.

There is a free information session for residents who would like to join the auxiliary fire team at 7 p.m. on November 14th at the Campbell River Fire Department (675 13th Avenue).

Application packages are available on www.campbellriver.ca/fire. Bring all applications to the fire department by 4 p.m. on November 21st.
