Spent firework cartridges littering Stories Beach

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Evidence of Halloween festivities remain on Stories Beach streets, as some residents left their trash behind.

Resident Naomi Selvaraja-Fossett noticed spent firework cartridges along the paved pullout at the beach on Friday morning. She picked up as much as she could, brought them home, and put them in her own garbage bins.

In an interview with the MyCampbellRiverNow.com team, she said it’s frustrating that there are no public garbage bins in Stories Beach. Selvaraja-Fossett said litter on the streets is a regular scene in the area.

“A lot of locals come and visit (the beach). A lot of tourists come and pull in to sit and have lunch but there’s nowhere for them to put their garbage because there are absolutely no garbage cans. We try to pick up the trash whenever we can, but our garbage cans can’t take it all,” Selvaraja-Fossett said.

The City of Campbell River has said Stories Beach sits along Highway 19A, which is a provincial road, so neither they nor the Strathcona Regional District are responsible for street cleanup or providing bins. Residents arrange for individual household garbage pickup, available with Waste Management and Sun Coast.

Mainroad Contracting Ltd. provides road maintenance services to the area. The MyCampbellRiverNow.com reached out to them to ask if their services include cleaning Stories Beach streets, but they have not responded to our request for comment yet.
