Campbell River resident thanks community for support after tragic house fire

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – A little over a year after a house fire claimed her mother’s life, Crystal Martin is thanking the community for the support she and her father have received.

Crystal’s parents lost their house to an early morning fire that started in their carport in August 2017. She said the fire department’s investigation concluded that oily rags caused the fire.

Stephen, Crystal’s father, was able to get out, but her mother Elsa died in the blaze.

A year later, she said she is thankful for the supportive community in Campbell River for helping her and her father move forward. Her father’s house is almost finished, and she said he should be able to move back in by February.

“I just wanted to thank the community members in our community. There’s just too many to thank. I love them that helped us with the fire, both immediately after the fire and just through this whole process of grieving my mom and rebuilding our house,” said Crystal.

She wanted to thank churches in the community for helping with meals and clothing, the Campbell River Fire Department and the RCMP Emergency Services for the immediate support and service to the Martin family after the fire, and SharKare for helping re-home a pet after the incident. She also wanted to thank others in Campbell River who sent her family messages of encouragement through social media.
