Local resident paying forward an act of kindness

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Sue Wallis received a knitting machine a few days ago, and she hopes to pay it forward by knitting a few scarves and toques for others who may need it.

The retired medical transcriptionist is also involved with the Grassroots, Kind Hearts Society, and she said she often sees residents who come to the dinners who do not have warm clothing.

“I was seeing children and teenagers, young people and middle-aged all the way to seniors on walkers and wheelchairs that don’t have warm clothing, just down on their luck. Whether their pension cheques or their welfare cheques don’t stretch from month to month and they’re freezing and they’re hungry,” said Wallis.

She initially posted on Facebook that she needed a knitting machine so she can make more scarves and toques and give them to Campbell River residents in need.

“A kind lady on Quadra said she had one that had been given to her and she said she was gonna pay it forward and she would give it to me.”

Wallis said the act of kindness inspired her to continue with her efforts. She also said she wants to give back because Campbell River has welcomed her and residents have shown her kindness.

She said she is not organizing a scarf drive, but she did say that if other residents would like to help with knitting and distributing scarves, they are more than welcome to.
