Island Highway crash victim hoping car won’t be a write-off

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Frank Fitton was driving along the Island Highway when the crash happened on Thursday afternoon.

He was driving past the ferry terminal when a taxi made a U-turn in the parking lot and crashed into his car.

“The car spun around, and the airbags deployed, and that was that,” Fitton said. He said his granddaughter and dog were in the car with him and that fortunately, none of them were hurt.

“Nobody was hurt. We’re all a little rattled, but we’re all fine.”

He said he hasn’t gotten word back from the ICBC yet, but he said he’s keeping his hopes up that they won’t write the car off.

“It’s not a very new car, but it’s in very good shape. We live quite a ways on the edge of town, there’s no way we could be without a car,” he added.

Fitton said that whatever the answer might be, he knows it will still be a financial burden on him and his wife as they are both pensioners. Despite what happened, Fitton said he’s grateful for the services from the emergency crews, the fire department and the RCMP in ensuring everyone involved were not seriously hurt.

According to the RCMP, the taxi driver was given a ticket for the unsafe U-turn, and has been fined. There will be no charges.
