Local dog food program received immense support amid challenges

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Lynn Devers said the volunteer dog food program she runs has faced issues, but it’s also had immense support.

Devers started the Foundation for Dog Relief two years ago, when she realized there were relief programs for cat owners, but not for dogs.

Foundation for Dog Relief aims to help owners who all of a sudden may be unable to provide food for their dogs. Devers and her team of volunteers deliver dog food to those who need it all over Campbell River, and going as far as Quadra Island.

The food is donated to her and sometimes, she gets it from the donation bin at Bosley’s.

“If you, through no fault of your own, lost your job, been injured, that kind of thing where you can’t work, but it’s to get you over the hump. You have to worry about your family… you shouldn’t have to worry whether you have to give your dog up too,” said Devers.

But lately, she said some of the residents have been verbally aggressive towards her volunteers whenever they deliver the food to the homes.

“Some of my volunteers have been getting verbal backlash because some people have come to expect the food every month and that’s not what this is about. This is to get you over the hump until you’re back to work or your illness is gone.”

Devers said she “lost it” when her helpers told her about the incidents. She took to social media to post about the situation.

“I thought I had to say something to help people understand this is not a feed-your-dog-for-life program.”

The post generated positive responses from residents. Devers received dog food and cash donations, as well as offers to help her deliver the food to homes.

“There was just an outpouring of support from Campbell River and I just want to say thank you.”

Devers said the issue is now being dealt with, and she has no doubt it will cool off soon.
