City hall drafting 10-year budget plan for Campbell River

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The Campbell River City Council is drafting a new 10-year budget plan.

In sessions from December 3rd through 5th, city council and staff will review base operating levels, operating projects and potential service level increases.

According to a release from the city, the budget is expected to be finalized by the end of December 5th and adopted during the December 17th council meeting.

This will be the fourth 10-year budget plan for Campbell River. It will ensure funding, tools, and equipment to support development and enhancement in the city.

City manager Deborah Sargent wrote in the release that the 10-year plan looks to provide service enhancement that will meet community priorities.

“Building on our Financial Stability and Resiliency plan that has won three international awards in a row for the highest standards of government financial planning, we will continue to fund essential services through ongoing operations and infrastructure renewal,” wrote Mayor Andy Adams in the release. “Council will also carefully consider opportunities to provide new services or enhancements that are in the best interest of the entire community.”

The new budget will also take into account affordable housing for Campbell River.

“We recognize that not all community housing needs are met in Campbell River, and the City is working with BC Housing to provide supportive housing for our most vulnerable people,” wrote Sargent in the release.

Data has shown Campbell River as the third most affordable community in B.C., and that many people are coming to live here. Hundreds of new housing units were built in Campbell River over the past year, with new subdivisions and a number of housing projects currently in the approval process.

Financial planning meetings will be broadcast live via the city’s website. Meetings will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. from December 3rd to December 5th. Residents interested can submit comments in writing to [email protected] by December 3rd or attend the December 3rd meeting.
