CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The City of Campbell River is asking for public feedback regarding sea level rise planning.
The city’s website includes two new documents which provide an overview of sea level rise and its potential impact on Campbell River.
The documents also include information on adaptation options for coastal communities, according to a release from the city.
The new information in the site was shared during last month’s open houses. City staff also gathered feedback then.
“With sea level rise planning well underway, the workshops gave participants an opportunity to learn about the expected impacts of sea level rise in Campbell River, and the range of potential options generally available to coastal communities,” said Amber Zirnhelt, Campbell River’s manager of long range planning and sustainability.
The site also has a feedback form with questions including community values in relation to sea level rise. The deadline to submit forms is December 18th.
“We heard great questions and received thoughtful feedback from community members about the wide range of values people hold for our waterfront – ranging from recreation, habitat, the importance of infrastructure such as roads, the seawalk, sewer and water to private property and development interests.”
According to the release, there will be more events planned for 2019 as the Campbell River Rising Seas planning initiative progresses.
Campbell River Rising Seas is a multi-year planning initiative, which will help Campbell River respond to future sea level rise. The planning initiative will produce a long-term sea level rise strategy.
The planning initiative is funded by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Union of BC Municipalities, the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions and Campbell River.
Campbell River is set to produce its own adaptation strategy to guide land use and infrastructure decision-making by 2019.
