CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The tail end of 2018 saw an increase of fire incidences in the city.
Campbell River Fire Rescue chief Thomas Doherty said the department often sees a spike in fires during the holiday season, mostly due to an increase in kitchen activity.
“From the 26th (of December) and on, we’ve responded to seven structure fire incidents in the city… we do see an increase in calls related to kitchen fires, and also heating equipment,” Doherty said.
Doherty added that it’s important to keep heating equipment well-maintained, and checked regularly.
The department also responded to two structure fires on New Year’s Day.
The fires were all contained with no serious injuries reported at the scenes, thanks to quick responses from crews. The Matlaten Crescent fire sent five people to the hospital due to smoke inhalation. It is still under investigation.
Fire Chief Doherty said that residents should be aware of what appliances are on in the kitchen. He added that residents should also make sure that candles are in containers that won’t easily fall over, and to make sure that candles are away from any other combustible materials.
