Worker fell through the floor at former mill, WorkSafeBC report to come

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – A worker fell through the floor at an old pulp mill over the weekend.

Fortunately, he was uninjured.

According to reports, the collapse happened inside, but the building itself is still intact and standing.

The collapse caused a rupture on a 400-pound oxygen tank and 100-pound propane cylinder. Fire crews cordoned off the area and let the gasses blow away and dissipate.

They do not pose any threat to residents or the environment.

The former Catalyst pulp mill has been decommissioned since 2010. The site is now owned by Rockyview Resources, a Calgary-based oil and gas exploration company.

Rockyview Resources aims to develop the old pulp mill into a liquefied natural gas plant, called Discovery LNG.

Currently, the company is doing demolition work at the former mill’s site.

WorkSafeBC said in an email statement that they were informed of the incident at 10:55 a.m. on Saturday. They have assigned an officer to the case and are currently investigating.

A full report will be available in the next few days, according to the agency.

WorkSafeBC has also said that a stop-work order is in place and should be posted publicly at the site.

We have reached out to the Campbell River Fire Department for more details, but we have not heard back yet. We will provide updates as information becomes available.
