Seat belts on school buses complex, waiting on task force: SD 72 superintendent

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Seat belts on school buses are complex but worth looking into.

This is according to School District 72’s superintendent Jeremy Morrow.

Morrow said that the district is waiting on word from the federal government regarding school bus safety.

“We really are reliant on external experts like Transport Canada to inform us regarding vehicle safety standards,” Morrow said.

“We would welcome the findings of the report of the federal transport minister – we’ll welcome those findings in this area and take action according to their recommendations.”

Federal Minister of Transportation Marc Garneau announced a task force to look into school bus safety. The task force is made up of members from provinces, territories, as well as bus manufacturers. Members are looking into possibly adding seat belts into existing buses.

“The rationale for why the board was interested in looking into this is because their paramount concern is the safety and well-being of the children in our care.”

Seat belts on school buses has been an ongoing issue after a Transport Canada report revealed that school buses without seat belts failed safety tests, as reported by the CBC’s The Fifth Estate.
