Sandowne Elementary student selected to be fire chief for a day

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – A Grade 3 Sandowne Elementary student spent the day as Campbell River’s fire chief.

According to a release from the city, Addison Berrevoets was selected to be the Campbell River Fire Rescue chief on February 5th.

She spent the whole day with the fire department, meeting firefighters on duty and touring the fire station. She also inspected fire truck safety equipment, and participated in training, including going up the 101-foot tower on Campbell River’s largest fire truck.

“The Fire Chief for a Day program is part of the fire department’s prevention program, and an effective way to connect with community members to raise awareness through educating young children,” wrote fire chief Thomas Doherty in the release.

“It’s also a great opportunity for children to get a firsthand look at daily operations in the fire department and to work side by side with our firefighters.”

Fire chief Doherty added that the department held Fire Chief for a Day now instead of Fire Prevention Week in October to spread out the messaging and to emphasize fire prevention and awareness do not just happen at one time.

“Fire prevention is a 365-day-a-year initiative.”
