Campbell River boy continues swimming to raise funds

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Sylas Thompson continues to brave the cold waters every single afternoon.

The Campbell River boy is still raising money for Grassroots, Kind Hearts Society and the Campbell River Women’s Resource Centre.

So far, Sylas has raised nearly $20, 000 for the two organizations. Donations have been coming in through a GoFundMe page set up by his grandmother Sheryl Thompson, as well as residents and other organizations giving him cheques and cash donations at his swim site.

Sylas is so dedicated to his cause that he still continued to swim even when temperatures dropped and snow came to Campbell River.

“It was really cold. I don’t even know how I did it,” the 11-year-old boy said.

Sheryl said she is very proud of her grandson and what he has accomplished so far.

“I’m really proud of his integrity to ride it through, even the day he was sick and had the flu,” she said.

“I thought (Sylas’ fundraising goal) was too high. It was lofty in my perspective, but he said ‘no’. I asked him how he was going to do it, and he said ‘I’ll just swim until I get it.'”

Sheryl added that she is proud of the community as well for coming together, donating, and cheering her grandson on.
