Hospice garden lights damaged for the third time

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The garden lights at the Campbell River Hospice Society were damaged again.

This time, however, the culprits were caught on surveillance.

According to Louise Daviduck, the hospice society’s executive director, two young people were caught damaging the lighting along the serenity garden path on Friday afternoon.

“I’m quite surprised that it happened again. Not only did the damage happen again, but that it was in the middle of the day on a Friday when kids were walking home from school,” Daviduck said.

“It was really disappointing to see that… in the middle of the day, they didn’t think twice about it.”

Daviduck said they installed the cameras along the garden path after the lights were damaged in early November of last year. That incident was the second time the lights were damaged.

She added that this time around, they’re fortunate to have the surveillance footage. She took the footage to the RCMP, who have been helping her locate the teens.

“They (the RCMP) are looking at possibly bringing me in where I could have a discussion with them along with their parents on what this damage means to an organization like the Hospice Society.”

Daviduck said she thinks part of the problem might be the fact that younger people do not understand what the hospice does and the benefits the organization brings to the community.

“A lot of them don’t understand non-profits, how we work and how we support them and their community.”

At this time, Daviduck said they don’t know yet if they will be replacing the lights.

“The board and I are going to evaluate the situation along with our build team and see if we can find another solution so that this situation doesn’t happen anymore.”
