SD 72 Battle of the Books encourages reading

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Battle of the Books tests students’ memory and knowledge of literature they’ve read.

And teams from all over School District 72 competed for the championship.

Contests for students in grades three to five and middle school make up Battle of the Books.

According to a release from the school district, each contest had six books that students had to read, starting in October. Teams then competed by answering questions about the books, testing their recollection and knowledge of the materials.

Teams within each school in the district competed to be school champions. The top two teams from each middle school went on to the district championship. Top elementary school teams had to compete for a zone championship before moving on to the district.

Pinecrest School’s team won the Grade 3 contest with a perfect score. The team from Quadra Island won the Grade 4 contest. Students from Penfield won the Grade 5 contest.

The team from Southgate Middle School are this year’s middle school champions.

The literacy competition was held at the Timberline Theatre on March 19th.

Battle of the Books is a literacy competition held by School District 72’s teacher-librarians to promote reading.
