Campbell River ‘on cusp’ of high fire danger rating

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – While you can still have campfires in Campbell River, that might not be the case soon if the hot and dry conditions persist.

Campbell River Fire Chief Thomas Doherty said the department follows the Coastal Fire Centre’s lead.

“Right now they don’t have a campfire ban on,” he said. “(A) Category 2 ban is in place which is basically your backyard ban and whatnot, and of course fireworks and sky lanterns and that sort of thing.”

Doherty said the department is watching the weather patterns closely.

“As soon as we get into that high (fire) danger rating which we’re right on the cusp – we’re like a danger rating of a three and a four, and usually with a few days of high risk we’ll consider putting in a campfire ban, which will ban all recreational fires, here.”

Doherty said the temperatures have dropped to more seasonal levels “but that could change quickly.”

“We’ll be watching it closely,” he said.
