Residents say monkey still on the loose

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – Campbell River residents say a monkey is still roaming free.

It was first seen around the area near Hilchey and Galerno Road last week by a Bee Line Taxi driver. According to social media posts, the driver says it looked like a capuchin monkey.

Some residents are saying it’s still in the area with various sightings reported to the MyCampbellRiverNow.com newsroom.

Lorraine Noel with the Campbell River SPCA says no one has called the branch to report a missing pet monkey.

“I don’t know how it escaped or who it escaped from,” Noel said.

“We have no information whatsoever, because no one has contacted us to put in a lost notice.”

She says there are some types of monkeys that are legal to be taken as pets, but they don’t know if the one reportedly seen in town is.

“There are some that are sold in pet stores. But without knowing what type of monkey this is, I’m not sure if it’s one of those exotic monkeys that should not be in Campbell River.”

“(It’s difficult) until we find out what type of monkey it actually is, to find out if it is an illegal breed.”
