Carihi student receives LGBTQ2+ award

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – A Carihi student has received a scholarship from the North Island Pride Society.

The award is meant to help an LGBTQ2+ youth with post-secondary education expenses.

For the first time, the scholarship has been given to an ally.

“We were inspired by (his) desire to further (his) studies and education as well as an ally, (continuing to) support LGBTQ2+ students and SOGI education,” North Island Pride Society educational director Sandra Weames said.

Braden Majic says it’s an honour to win the award.

“It feels nice to be recognized… I’m really proud to be a Tyee and to have gone above and beyond (for the LGBTQ2+ community) during my four years in this school,” Majic said.

“The way I’ve been able to contribute is by covering stories (for the school paper) and write articles to help inform the community about the amazing things Carihi High students are doing and how we are inclusive.”

“I’ve taken that and fostered that inclusive environment.”

Majic says he wants to become a teacher and continue his advocacy for the LGBTQ2+ community.

“I really hope to infuse acceptance and community in all of my future endeavours as a teacher in the classroom, in the school through leadership roles and movements.”

He adds that receiving the award makes him feel like he’s part of the community.

“Community is about everyone that contributes to it and I’m very proud to have made an impact.”
