Highest student enrollment ever for summer school programs

Campbell River summer school programs saw the highest ever enrolment this year.

Around 739 students were in programs at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Nineteen courses were offered to 483 elementary students.

The courses focused largely on literacy skills and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics).

This year’s elementary programming also included a play-based therapy course for the first time.

The number of students at the middle school level continued to decline despite courses being offered at both École Phoenix and Southgate Middle Schools.

Suggestions to try to increase student enrollment at the middle school level included more trips and outdoor activities, more school tours to build comfort with the school buildings, and more marketing of summer school at the students’ home schools leading up to the registration deadline.

Students also said they enjoyed the small class size, atmosphere, and opportunities for new ways of learning.

School District 72 Secretary-Treasurer Kevin Patrick says only a third of school districts around the province choose to annually support Summer School.
