Youth filmmakers invited to send ideas for film fest

Three young filmmakers from Campbell River have a vision.

And they want their fellow filmmakers and artists to be a part of it.

Volunteer Campbell River is partnering with the filmmakers to create the Vancouver Island Youth Film Festival.

Chloe Valentine is the youth engagement coordinator at Volunteer Campbell River. She says it’s an exciting time.

“They had an amazing vision to create an opportunity for other youth in Campbell River to be able to share their stories through the art of film,” Valentine said.

She adds that starting on November 1st, there will be a “secret theme”. After that, participants have one month to complete their film.

“(The films) will be judged by an external panel of judges and displayed at the Timberline theatre in January. There will be cash prizes and other items up for prizes to win.”

Valentine says the film festival is specifically looking for people who want to tell stories through film.

“We’re looking for creative stories from the perspective of the filmmakers themselves. We’re accepting any genre – documentary could be one of them.”

“We’re also hoping to keep the theme close to home. We can’t really say it yet, but it’ll be something local,” she said.

She adds that they’re hoping to create a platform that Campbell River youth can feel comfortable using.

“We’re also hoping to empower youth to do volunteer work in a creative way. And we’re hoping that the community will come together and really support the young visionaries.”

There are two age categories: 15 to 18 and 19 to 30. Valentine says actors and crew members can be of any age, but filmmakers have to fall in one of those age brackets.

Should you have more questions, you can visit the film festival’s page to contact the organizers.
