City reaches fourth milestone in climate protection program

The City of Campbell River is doing something good and it’s being recognized for it.

Mayor Andy Adams says during the most recent Union of BC Municipalities convention, Campbell River was recognized for reaching its fourth milestone in protecting the environment and helping with the climate change fight.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Partners for Climate Protection help local governments through a five-step program that helps those municipalities reduce emissions and create environmentally sustainable changes.

“Municipal governments influence or control half the sources of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions and we’re also frontline to responding to severe weather events and other impacts of climate change,” Mayor Adams said.

“By taking action, we can save money in municipal operations, lower energy costs for residents and businesses, and increase investment in our local economy.”

Amber Zirnhelt, the city’s Long Range Planning and Sustainability Manager, received the award on Monday night.

Mayor Andy Adams says Zirnhelt, in her role at the city, helped Campbell River achieve the milestone.

“I ask you to join me in celebrating this milestone with Ms. Zirnhelt, who really took it upon herself and spearheaded this tremendous award.”
