Residents propose a condition as part of Merecroft Road re-zoning

Several Campbell River residents are asking for a safety measure along Merecroft Road.

During Monday night’s meeting, council members received correspondence from residents for a landscape buffer or a recreational trail along 2079 and 2099 Merecroft Road.

The path will provide safe access to the Beaver Lodge Lands.

Local resident Valerie Masterman sent her proposal to the council. She says in her letter that she’s proposing a recreational trail to make the area safer for riders and more comfortable for the horses.

“Until a few weeks ago, riders were able to follow a number of undeveloped right of ways to avoid the roads and cut through a private property at the end of Jacqueline Road to access the ERT,” Masterman wrote.

“This private access is now closed and the only alternatives for accessing the Beaver Lodge lands are via the busy Peterson Road or along a very rocky path that follows the western extend of 2099 Merecroft Road.”

Masterman adds Peterson is unsafe as it’s too busy with traffic, especially for younger riders, and the rocky path is hard on the horses.

The correspondence and the proposal will now be reviewed by city staff.

Councillor Claire Moglove says she has personally received other correspondence regarding making the area safer.

“It appears to be a safety issue along Evergreen, so I would like to see the report back as to what – if anything can be done,” Councillor Moglove said.

There is no word yet on when staff will bring a report back to the council.
