Council weighing Quinsam Heights development

Campbell River council is exploring options on the Quinsam Heights development proposal.

Last week, council members deferred a decision on how best to continue to review urban growth options while working with Harry Long, who plans to develop 142 acres in Quinsam Heights.

Council will consider options based on a report being prepared for the Nov. 4 meeting.

Long aims to apply to rezone 2079 and 2099 Merecroft to permit a combination of housing types, including:

  •  single-family dwellings;
  • single-family dwellings on small lots; and
  •  single-family dwellings, duplexes and triplexes

The current estate zoning in Quinsam Heights supports servicing lots that are at least one acre to maintain the semi-rural character and “provide an opportunity for hobby farms, equestrian activities, and small-scale agriculture within close proximity to the downtown and other urban amenities.”

Long told Council he is working to establish appropriate wildlife corridors, stormwater management and housing distance from natural spaces in the Beaver Lodge Lands.

The City’s urban growth review will report on how best to support future housing development, with recommendations for areas and options for housing growth and whether or not to extend the City’s urban containment boundary.

This study is underway, and recommendations are expected in the first half of 2020.
