The Vancouver Island Youth Film Festival is rolling out the red carpet for tomorrow’s awards ceremony.
The film festival is a first-ever for Campbell River, celebrating filmmakers aged 15-30 who have spent the last month putting together films focused around the theme of “community.”
Chloe Valentine, youth coordinator with Volunteer Campbell River, says the idea for the film festival was presented to the organization last summer.
“The entire festival is by youth for you,” says Valentine. “We have a core team of three young students who came to us with the idea around June. Since then, we’ve worked together to make their dream happen and to really provide opportunities for other youth in Campbell River to experience a film festival.”
Valentine says films from Nanaimo, Powell River, Comox, and Campbell River were submitted and shown to a group of judges who work in the film industry.
“There was a panel of external judges. They are not apart of our organization because we wanted them to be really unbiased.”
Along with recognition and awards for the submitted films, Valentine adds there will be door prizes for those in attendance as well.
“Everything that we’ve gathered for the awards is all sponsored based. The City of Campbell River has been extremely supportive in donating financial and in-kind gifts.”
All are welcome to attend the film festival taking place at the Timberline Theatre on South Dogwood St.
Admission is at no charge and festival-goers will enjoy a free bag of popcorn.
Doors are scheduled to open at 6:30 pm sharp, with the first nominated film set to play at 7:00 pm.
